Tanea’s personal journey has been marked by resilience. After her mother’s mental breakdown when she was six, she and her siblings were raised by family members. She later lived with an aunt in North Carolina before moving to Washington, DC, at sixteen, where she experienced a cultural shock but adapted. She became pregnant in high school but remained committed to her education, graduating while expecting her son. She subsequently separated from her son’s father. After taking college courses while working in DC, she returned to North Carolina following his tragic passing.

Her nursing journey began in 2011, taking prerequisites while balancing work and motherhood. She gained eight years of experience working with children and adolescents with mental health issues. She has worked tirelessly to complete her education, earning her CNA I in 2017 and CNA II in 2022 while working full-time. She now works at UNC Hospital in Chapel Hill, gaining valuable hands-on experience in multiple units. Currently enrolled in the Associate Degree in Nursing program at Wilson Community College, Tanea is pursuing her goal of becoming a registered nurse, preparing to take the standardized Nurse exam and completing her degree in May 2026. She plans to travel as a nurse after her son graduates high school.

She is determined to set an example for her son by demonstrating the power of hard work. Receiving this award would allow her to reduce her work hours, focus on studying, and build a better future for herself and her son.
