Lourdes is currently pursuing an associate degree in nursing at Wake Technical Community College. She works part-time while getting her education and raising her child.
Lourdes has faced so many challenges trying to achieve her dreams. She migrated to the United States in 2014 and faced culture shock along with a language barrier. However, she knew she wanted a better future for her daughter, and the only way to do that was to go to college. Over time, Lourdes learned English by herself by watching tv and reading the news. It was when her child started kindergarten that she enrolled in college. Once she started taking classes, she discovered her passion for nursing and took all the prerequisite classes to apply to the program. She was so proud when she was accepted into a nursing program and is graduating in the Spring of 2022.
But with that, the last semester will be the most challenging for her. She has to complete 200 hours at a hospital, continue to work her part time job to pay her bills, and be responsible for taking care of her child, all while doing this alone.
Her career goals are to become a Registered Nurse. After she graduates, she will take the exam to obtain her RN license. This curriculum is preparing Lourdes to care for patients with professionalism and competency by training her in clinical skills and experience in inpatient settings through her clinical rotations.
“If I am considered for this scholarship, I assure you that I will do my best to honor you for this great privilege and you will be helping me and my daughter so much in these difficult times.”
