Earlier this month, Soroptimist members and colleagues gathered at Mount Vernon Middle School for our 2nd Annual Career Fair. This year’s event included 13 volunteers and 26 students (mostly 8th graders). The volunteers represented a wide range of careers including real estate, dentistry, military service, and interior design. Our volunteers included not only Soroptimist members and colleagues, but volunteers from Journeymen, an organization that mentors young men at the school.

The format of the career fair was “speed networking” to allow for all students to meet with each volunteer, and the emphases on personal interactions created a welcoming setting . The students were paired up to rotate through the tables, and this format led to lively conversation, even from the more typically quiet students. Many of the volunteers brought items or materials to help with the discussions. At the end, there was pizza for all and many students took the opportunity to continue talking with the volunteers.

We all look foward to next year’s event! If you’d like to participate, please contact us.
