Alexis is a student at Fayetteville State University, and will complete her bachelor’s degree in sociology in May 2025. She works full-time while caring for four children.
Alexis was raised by her loving grandmother, who took on caring for her and her twin brother who were born prematurely. She had her first child at 16, and despite dealing with domestic violence and the challenges of being a new mother, graduated from high school a year later.
Now 36, Alexis works at a daycare, takes a full load of classes online, and cares for her children, all of whom have special needs. She learned at an early age to advocate for the special care her children need, and knows her early years in a safe and supportive home with her family has helped her thrive.
Alexis’ current goal is to earn a master’s degree in social work and become an elementary or middle school counselor. However she has bigger dreams to open a facility that provides services for teen mothers and their children. Based on her own experience, she believes being in a strong, caring environment and learning essential life skills will help teen mothers succeed.
