Latisha is working to obtain her Associate of Science Degree in Medical Administration from Gwinnett College in November 2021. She sees this as a first step towards her goal of becoming a Licensed Practical Nurse (LPN).
Latisha was raised by her grandmother as her own mother struggled with addiction. As a teenager, Latisha became pregnant and made the difficult decision to let her son be raised by his grandfather.
After having a second child, she moved to Raleigh for more opportunities where she had her third child who was diagnosed early on with Muscular Dystrophy. Latisha became a certified nursing assistant and took an active role as nurse and advocate for her son who is now 17, far exceeding the life expectancy of 10 he was given. During this time Latisha found, with help from her social worker and church, a new strength and began to thrive and help others. She even started a nonprofit which helps single moms pass their state certification exams to become Certified Nurse Assistants (CNAs).
Latisha exemplifies the values of Soroptimist in her statement:
“By my helping my sisters advance, I have helped society and Wake County become a better place to live and work. As women support their families, they support a better society.”
