Maggie is pursuing an associate degree in surgical technology at Durham Tech Community College. She works part-time and is the mother of 2 children, aged 7 and 2.
Maggie has faced plenty of adversity but her commitment to her personal growth and her lifelong dream of being part of a team in the operating room keeps her motivated. Her dedication to education, work and family gives her the spirit to persevere through all of life’s challenges.
One recent challenge occurred during the middle of a semester when she had to have eye surgery, but Maggie never considered calling it quits. Instead, she took a brief break, only to return to school more focused and determined than before. A co-worker noted that “Once she gets her mind made on something, there is no stopping her.”
Maggie often becomes stressed thinking about paying bills and caring for her children. Therefore she will use this award to help her with monthly expenses. This will allow her to spend more time focusing on her studies and her children.
Maggie’s perseverance and courage is truly inspiring and her compassion to help others is reflected in her career choice. She knows she has a place in the operating room and she cannot wait until that day comes.
